Skills-Based Hiring: The Smarter Way to Retain Top Talent
Are you having a hard time retaining employees? Skills-based hiring may be your answer.
Skills-based hiring is the practice of screening employees by what they have proven they can do, not by proxies like degree status, major, or titles.
The numbers are striking. Hiring for skills is 5x more predictive of job performance than hiring for education and over 2x more predictive than hiring for work experience. Organizations using skills-based practices are 107% more likely to place talent effectively and 98% more likely to retain high performers compared with their peers. Skills-based hiring clearly works.
That’s probably because it’s an intensive, thoughtful process. In my own practice, I use a combination of interviewing and shadowing, ONET research and assessments to understand what it takes to succeed in a role, and how to test for them.
If that sounds daunting, here’s some good news. In a NACE report, employers shared that transitioning to skills based hiring wasn’t that hard - 47% reported that it was only slightly challenging. The biggest hurdle reported was the amount of time and HR resources it takes to implement new systems, and - here’s some more good news - that’s where I can help you out.
My hiring practice is grounded in over a decade of workforce development experience, graduate training in workforce policy, and advanced statistical methods. That means you get a rigorous process that's practical and affordable.
